The Art of Sacrifice – George Petrou OAM On display at the Bendigo Military Museum

The Art of Sacrifice shares George Petrou’s deeply personal journey-an artist’s tribute to Australia’s service personnel, born from his own battle with cancer.

During chemotherapy in 2010, George turned to portraiture as both a healing process and a mission: to honour the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of those who serve. This exhibition features 20 portraits from his book that blend history and lived experience. Through this work, George explores the enduring themes of valour and bravery, weaving past and present into a compelling narrative. Created amid the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, the exhibition is both a creative act of resilience and a heartfelt gesture of national gratitude. George’s work has resonated with thousands across Australia and beyond-his portraits not only commemorate sacrifice but also connect us all to a shared story of service, strength, and hope.
